While many people think acting is all glitz and glamor, they couldn’t be more wrong. A serious acting career requires an amount of self-discipline unparallelled by most other professions. A prime example of this sort of discipline lies in weight control. So many actors have been faced with the task of losing a monumental amount of weight in a very short time. Two prime examples are Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale. In 2010, Bale dropped 60 pounds to star in the The Fighter, and in 2014, McConaughey lost 38 pounds to play an AIDs victim. So many people have been dazzled by these figures, aspiring to meet similar benchmarks, but not all methods for weight loss are healthy choices.
This is, perhaps, the most effective way actors shed pounds on limited notice. That’s not to say it’s the healthiest. This type of dieting can be harmful to many of a person’s vital organs and can greatly increase their risk for contracting viruses due to a suppressed immune system caused by malnourishment . Other side effects can consist of psychological changes. A crash-dieter may become irritable, depressed or experience mood-swings. Those persons also run the risk of becoming anorexic or bulimic.
Bodies require a time to recuperate between work-outs. By not allowing time for recoup, a person runs the risk of causing stress fractures and, perhaps, more long-term problems such as osteoporosis, heart problems and even reproductive disorders in females.

Most actors looking to slim down quickly for a role, do not go this route; however, many actors and actresses have undergone this surgery in an attempt for long-term weight loss. This surgery is often helpful for people whom are morbidly obese. Still, there are multiple drawbacks to this route of weight loss. Patients of Gastric by-pass surgery face a heightened risk of nutritional deficiencies due to the way food is rerouted through the stomach and intestines. Other side effects may include: blood clots, organ damage during surgery, hemorrhaging, staple line leaks, bowel obstruction and multiple other internal GI issues.
